Iwo Jima

Of course the photograph of the Marines raising the flag is one of the most, if not the most famous photographs from the war. But to hear the details of the battle that led to the photograph just takes your breath away. Both sides were absolutely intent on having that island and both sides were willing to sacrifice everything to have that island..and literally fought tooth and nail over that island.

This photograph is moving but with the background of the picture, it has a much stronger impact. It was really interesting to hear about the photographer who did not receive as much recognition for his picture. The number of men who lost their lives or who were wounded in the battle for the island is staggering.

I really like this picture, but it doesn't do justice to the men who were lost during this battle. I had never heard that this was the second, not the first, flag raising. It makes it seem almost staged.

I had never heard that this picture was the staged version of the first flag raising. I also found it interesting to know that only three of the six soldiers survived. I think this shows how intense this battle was.

I also did not know that this was the second photo of the flag-raising. Regarding the original post's comment on how both sides were so completely invested in fighting tooth and nail over the island--it totally reinforces for me the situation that leads up to making such a complicated and dire decision to use the bomb because of how intent they were to fight to the death.
