Italians
I have been wondering about the relations between the Italians and the Germans. When one thinks of Italy in a war, one thinks of flipping sides. After seeing how Hitler continuously ignored and used Mussolini, I was wondering why he continues to side with him? As egotistical as most dictators are, why not leave Hitler? He did not have to join the allies but why stay on Germany's side?

Mussolini thought that by siding with the Germans, it would best allow him to recreate the Roman Empire that he always dreamed about in theory. Germany aka Hitler was not very interested in the Southern territories that Mussolini wanted to take over, but when the Germans had to intervene in Greece, Mussolini should have recognized that he would always be playing second fiddle to Nazi Germany. In the latter years of the war, Mussolini had to face severe criticism from his own populace and was eventually assasinated by his own people. All because he decided early on in the war that HItler would be the best ally for him to accomplish his goal of a new Roman Empire.
Mussolini made the same mistake that Stalin made. I understand that both countries really thought they would get something out of the relationship with Hitler but didn't they see his mistakes. He was invading a lot of countries in a short amount of time. The trail behind his soliders was covered the brutality they showed their POWs and anyone considered a subhuman.
Did Italy ever get any land from his support of Hitler?
