The Phoney War refers to the "war" that Britain and France declared after the Germany invaded Poland in September of 39. Britain and France, although declaring war on Germany, really didn't do much as to help the Polish fight the war, and pretty much just stood behind their borders reinforcing themselves. They could have attacked Germany, aided Poland, or done something more to actually be combative. Britain felt it was better to blockade Germany and hope that it submitted to its demands. As we all know, this did not stop the Germans from taking over most of Europe.
