After the surrender of the Italians to the German forces, why did they put their fellow Axis partners in work camps? I thought that by banding together in the beginning the Germans and Italians were in it together and not at odds with each other.
After this move, Hitler seems to be in the war only for himself and the furthering of his ambitions.

Well, I think that shows Hitler's true colors. He did everything for himself. That goes for his alliances with any country such as the nazi-soviet non aggression pact.
I think that any country that allied itself with Hitler's Germany had to know that eventually a time would come when their usefulness was at and end and they would become the next target.
