Herken forest
This was an unbelievable military event. I am curious to know why this was ever done, it was a lose/lose situation for the U.S. There was no major goal that could be achieved. It seems like some officer got drunk one night and came up with a "great idea." With nothing to gain why did U.S. commanders put so many lives in danger?

if i remember correctly from previous research on this subject, the US wanted the forest cleared to secure the General Hodge 1st Army's left flank for their advance into Germany
It did not seem like they were even trying to clear the forest. It was so dense that they could not. Why did they not try to re-plan when the first plan was not working for them. This is like many of their stubborn plans. I think that this war was somewhat famous for this on both sides.
My Father Winfred L Cornett of Co. L 310th infantry Reg. 78th lighting Div. he always talked about how bad it was the Germens would shell at tree top level and the shells burst would bring down tree tops & explosion on the troops. He lived through the fighting of WW2. He passed away Sept. 01,2010. I miss my Father very much. (Ron Cornett)
