However, his troops seemed to have a different opinion about him, calling him things like "Dug-in Doug". Also other armed forces seemed to dislike him after his attack on the bonus march. My question is why is there such a disconnect here? How can the public have such a totally opposite view of him as the armed forces?

I do believe this had to do with the fact that MacArthur was everything the public wanted to see in a general. He knew how to work the publicity side of things, as exemplified by his photo-op return to the Philippines. He was never afraid to speak out against politicians, and eventually this got him fired during the Korean War. But to the public, he was always the fearless leader, corncob pipe in mouth, aviators on, staring down the enemy. As you said, in truth, he wasn't always that strategically sound in his thinking.
